Library of the Alliance israélite universelle (AIU)

The library of the Alliance israélite universelle was founded in 1860, at the same time as the organization itself. The library grew rapidly and by the beginning of the 20th century it had become a major resource in France for the study of Judaism. With the acquisition of important manuscript collections and scholarly libraries, it took on its function as a major force of heritage preservation, a vocation which continues to this day. The library was dismantled by the Nazis in 1940, but its holdings were largely reconstituted after the war. The growth and evolution of Jewish studies led to the complete renovation of the library in 1989, at which point new technologies were introduced. At the dawn of the 21st century, the AIU Library is ready to pursue its mission of preserving and disseminating Jewish cultural heritage.
