"הפנקס של קהילת קאסאלי, הקהילה הראשית במדינת מונפיראטו שבאיטליה הצפונית, מתפרסם כאן לראשונה. הפנקסים ששרדו מקהילות איטליה הם מן הקדומים שהגיעו אלינו מאירופה, וכמה מהם כבר ראו אור במהדורות מדעיות משובחות. אליהם מצטרף עתה פנקס זה, השופך אור יקרות על חייה של קהילה יהודית תוססת ואגב כך פותח אשנב להשקיף ממנו על תולדות היהודים ועל זיקתם לסביבה הנוצרית באיטליה הנוצרית בשלהי ימי הביניים ובראשית העת החדשה. יהודים ישבו בקסאלי עוד במחצית הראשונה של המאה החמש עשרה. כפי הנראה רובם היו מהגרים מגרמניה או צאציאהם של מהגרים אלו. בסיס הקיום של הקהילה היו ’המלווים’, בעלי הבנקים. הם שקיבלו את זכות המגורים במקום. לצדם היו בקהילה גם ’בלתי מלווים’, ובין היתר ניתן להבחין פה ושם בפנקס במתח ששרר לעתים בין שתי הקבוצות". -- כריכה אחורית.

The Minutes book of the Jewish Casale community (the main Jewish community in the state of Monferrato in northern Italy of the 17th century) is being published here for the first time. The books written by the Italian communities that survived are the oldest to arrive to us from Europe and some of them have already been published in high quality scientific editions. Those books are now joined by this one, and a precious light is shed on the life of a vibrant Jewish community. It also gives the reader an opportunity to learn of the Jews in Italy at the end of the dark ages and the beginning of the Renaissance and their affinity to the Christian community. Jews were recorded in Casale as far as the first half of the 15th century. They were believed to be mostly immigrants from Germany or the descendant of those immigrants.
